BIRTH PHOTOGRAPHY

Birth photography is, for me, the biggest joy and gift as a photographer. To quietly document those poignant and transformative moments in a woman’s, child’s and family’s life is truly a blessing to be able to be a part of.

The intimacy and beauty that comes through in birth photography is like no other. Birth is often such a raw and unique time in our lives- one of the few moments when an opportunity exists for our defenses to drop and to be completely present to the unfolding life that is emerging.

When I gave birth to my son, even as a photographer, I chose not to have photographs taken. I always said I wanted to experience it for what it was and didn’t want my memory tarnished. I was also unsure about having someone present who I didn’t know well. Now, almost ten years after his birth, I would love dearly for a photographic record of both his arrival and the first moments when I became a mother. The few photos I do have or our first few days together, I cherish immensely.

In photographing you birth, I work to capture each individual moment so that at the end, they all come together to relate a story- the journey of your birth. There is no story like it!

In the time that I have worked as both a doula and a birth photographer, I have experienced how amazing and important it can be to have a birth support team that has been chosen by you- to meet your needs. Although the roles of photographer and doula are different in many aspects, I feel that they share a similar essence. I experience both as an opportunity to hold the space for your experience (whatever that may be); to find the movement, joy and the essence of what is unfolding for you- and highlight it.

Having a professional photographer at your birth will also provide the space for your support people/person to focus more on your needs in birth.  When I photograph a birth, your support people’s participation is documented as well! This allows me to capture moments of intimacy that might otherwise be missed if they were worrying about remembering to take photos at the right moment or getting the lighting correct!

So, if you’re even curious about having your little one’s arrival documented, I would encourage you to look into it further- either with me or with another photographer. Find someone who you feel comfortable with and shop around. Every photographer and person is different! Feel free to call me and have a chat- I’d love to hear from you to discuss your specific needs!
